City of Phoenix Installs LED Lights in Pedestrian Corridor
“Green Light District” Test Brightens Popular First Friday Art Walk
Join Mayor Gordon as he sheds new light on his “Green Phoenix” initiative by installing cost-saving LED lights in a popular pedestrian corridor.
LED light bulbs will be installed in a test area of Downtown Phoenix dubbed the “Green Light District”. This pilot test program will allow the Phoenix Streets Department to monitor ongoing effectiveness of LED lights and move toward considering the new technology for future installations throughout the City. The lights, which shed bright, white light, are called “green” due to the energy and cost savings the City will realize when compared to traditional light bulbs.
“Our current streetlight technology has advanced about as far as it can,” said Mayor Gordon. “With efficient, cost-effective LED lights now available, this fits right in with our plans to make Phoenix the Greenest City in America.”
“LED is important in that it not only offers the cost savings, efficiency benefits and lifespan gains, but is also a truly Green technology that does not require mercury or lead elements in the manufacturing process,” said Matthew P. Critchley of Essco Wholesale Electric, the distributor of the LED lights. “They are manufactured with no toxic elements and are very environmentally-friendly”.
Mayor Gordon will formally introduce the new lights on FRIDAY, AUGUST 7 at 8:00 p.m. – in front of Roosevelt Tavern, 816 N. Third Street and Bunky Boutique, 812 N. Third Street.
The “Green Light District” streetlamps are located on Third Street, between Garfield and McKinley.
